Maryland Heatwave Highlights Urgent Need for Efficient Cooling in Multifamily Buildings

Maryland has been experiencing an intense heatwave throughout the summer season, with temperatures consistently soaring above seasonal averages. This extreme heat has highlighted the challenges faced by multifamily buildings, where efficient cooling systems and effective heat management are crucial to maintaining resident comfort and reducing energy costs.

Enhancing Comfort and Efficiency: The Role of Smart Thermostats in Multifamily Buildings

Smart thermostats offer numerous benefits to multifamily buildings, enhancing both comfort and energy efficiency. These devices use real-time data from indoor and outdoor sensors to optimize heating and cooling, leading to significant cost savings. By learning the unique thermal characteristics of a building, smart thermostats adjust to maintain ideal temperatures, reducing tenant complaints and improving overall satisfaction. Additionally, remote management through apps allows property managers to monitor and control settings effortlessly, ensuring efficient operation and quick response to any issues. This advanced technology not only lowers utility bills but also contributes to a more sustainable and comfortable living environment.

Runwise Offers No-Cost Heating System Upgrades for Maryland Multifamily Buildings

Our smart-thermostat channel partner, Runwise, has teamed up with EMPOWER MD and Washington Gas to offer a substantial incentive for Maryland multifamily buildings. The program is open to multifamily buildings as well as commercial/office and school/municipal properties. Eligible buildings will receive hardware, installation, and the first two years of annual monitoring for free. Requirements include being a centrally heated steam or hydronic building with 50+ units, being located in Maryland’s Washington Gas territory (the blue area below), and having installation completed by October 1, 2024. Exemptions can be made for larger properties with excessive gas use under 50 units on a case-by-case basis. Don’t miss this opportunity to upgrade your building’s heating system at no initial cost.

Runwise has proven to be notably effective in buildings all along the East Coast. Their smart thermostats were deployed in three buildings managed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, located at 182 Calcutta Street, 2777 Goethals Road North, and EWR – Building 1. Between February and May 2023, these buildings collectively saved over $18mm in heating costs, demonstrating the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the Runwise system in large-scale, high-traffic properties.
